Labor of Love - what not to do (Part 2 of 3)

Can't you see those wonderful bones? This mirror is what MAKES this desk. Or at least, it is what used to make it, before we fixed her up. This mirror was the reason we decided to risk our lives taking this little vanity down a precarious and junk filled staircase (think of those comic strips, where you see the father tripping down the stairs on a roller skate.) That could have been our fate, but it was worth it. The detail on this mirror makes you take a second glance.

I once again appologize for missing parts in my photo journaling. The above was taken after I had obviously taken the mirror frame off the vanity and the mirror out of the frame. Remember how the previous painters slapped paint everywhere? Well, that became a challenge for me with this mirror. I, foolishly, thought I could cut corners and work on everything in one evening.


You know how I had trouble with the paint stripper? That was still fresh in my mind as I started this project. When I disassembled the mirror, there was a "frame" of yellow paint on the mirror.

I must confess this, so you do not try it. However, I fully admit that this was not a logical choice and an epic fail.

I began to sand off the paint. Smart right? No, stupid. The only reason I thought it was working was because I did not have great light. It LOOKED like it was working. And in a way, it was. The paint was comign right off...and being replaced by scratches. This is my hand to the forehead moment. Idiot! You can sorta see them in the pic below.



So yeah. What a great move, me.




The only good to come out of that stupid move? Finding a way to fix it! I am currently in process with that, so lets hope it works! More next week on that.



However, in the meantime, I worked on painting the frame. I had to keep working, so I did not use my time lamenting my lovely mirror. (New ones do not do justice to those old beauties with age on them.)




Here is a picture of it back in the frame. The scratches dont really show under the frame unless you look closely in person, but I am still going to work on getting them out!






Check back next week to see if I will be able to fix it and how the finished vanity will look!

Yes it is, though I will be taking them off. It has four casters but only three wheels. Since they were old wooden wheels, apparently one broke in half and went missing...

What color is more vibrant, calming, and fun all mixed into one? For me, it is a bright robin's egg blue. It can be a statement color, and accent color, or whatever you want it to be. I have to give my boy the credit for finding this chest sometime last year. I apologize I didnt really get a "before" picture. The chest was painted brown. Why you would ever really paint wood brown, is beyond me. Especially this chest. It is a cedar chest, smells wonderful and has beautiful, rich natural wood. I sanded this one down, because I wanted to salvage the beauty. However, even then, the brown paint remained in the carvings on the front and in the grooves of the legs. I would have saved that beautiful wood too, but you already know I did not. Why did I not, you may ask? (Especially when I keep going on and on and on about the wood...) Because of this. The top. What's Cookin Wednesday - Sweet Potato & pinto bean tacos

SWEET POTATO AND PINTO BEAN TACOS adapted from thugkitchen.com ....but there is offensive language on the site (and in the recipes) - so you've been warned! 3 cups of cooked pinto beans (about 2-15 ounce cans) 1 teaspoons of coconut or olive oil (Olive oil is what I had) ½ cup veggie broth or water (water....) 2 teaspoons smoked paprika or chili powder (I went chili powder) 2 teaspoons blackstrap molasses (I used what I had in the cabinet) 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar or lemon juice (I have both of these at home usually, went with lemon juice this time around) 2-3 garlic cloves 1 pound of sweet potatoes (this should be about 2 cups when you chop it all up) ½ of a yellow onion 1 teaspoon coconut or olive oil salt to taste soft corn tortillas standard taco toppings that you like to add. Warm the first teaspoon of oil in a medium pot. Add the beans, water, chili powder, molasses, vinegar, and garlic. Get it to start bubbling slowly for about 5 m...

Labor of Love (Part 1 of 3)

I love lace. I love the delicacy with which it presents itself to the world. That being said, I dont really use it very much. I do have some family doilies, and my wedding dress has some lace, but I dont go too crazy. I like to be able to clean things, and not have dust mites clinging to every available piece of cloth (they cling to everything else anyway.) So, I decided to try a painting technique. Why not paint the lace on the object? Easy to clean, lovely design, what could be better? We got this child's vanity in an old attic pick. Yes, we went into someone's hot and muggy attic for several hours. Yes, they let us jsut dig through things (can you believe it?!?!) unsupervised. Yes, we had to take our own flashlights. And yes, there was mouse droppings and dead birds up there. It was gross, but worth it. My boy LOVED it! American Pickers is his favorite tv show.
