And so it begins

Hello all!

This is the first installment of the redos, reuse, and renews. I am Jeannette, also known as the third. How do I contribute to the world? By day, I am a solid citizen, giving back to the world through my work at a non-profit. Aspiring to make the world a better place for those who need an extra hand! And we are doing it: breaking the cycle of poverty and despair...one life at a time. If you can discover where I work from that phrase, I will send you a PF Chengs free appetizer card! Just be the first to post in the comments!

By evening, I still remain a solid citizen. :-) I often find myself doing a great number of things: taking care of my little house/yard, feeding my husband (I LOVE to cook), and doing laundry. However, occasionally, I get to step away from those things (or catch up enough to have a night free!) to do some outside projects or go ride horses.

Since riding horses is more fun to do in person, I have the privilege of sharing some of my outside projects. And since I have a captive audience...

Total cost: $36

Items used:

. Grey Paint ($33, the rest will eventually go on our bathroom walls.)

. Black Spray Paint

. Black Stencil Paint

. Coffee Table ($1)

. Stencil ($2, on clearance at HL)

. Paint Brush

. Tape (masking tape works on furniture. But you have to take it off quickly as it will pull up the paint if left on while it dries.)

I am going to start with a project I worked on just a few weeks ago. I didnt get a lot of in between pictures, but I am trying to get better at that. For now, it is just before and after.

No one else wanted this ugly...i mean understated...little coffee table. So, being a huge sucker for wanting to make things wanted, I decided I would take it home.

Part of the casing around the side was coming off (you can see it drooping a bit at the bottom). So I just had to put that back on. I taped the rest of it up, including the legs.

Then I started painting. I got two coats on an then started taking off masking tape. Some of the paint ended up on the legs anyway, and I was a bit bummed. After it dried fully, I started the stencil. I find it hard to reuse the stencil all in one sitting, as paint inevitably gets underneath it and blurs the image.

After that dried, we took a look at it and knew we would have to paint the legs too. I thought the wood look might be cool, but it just didnt look right.

I thought about this daunting task and started to think of ways to paint the legs. Should if tape down a blanket or something. My genius husband came to my rescue and told me to unscrew the legs. Some days, the obvious is just right in front of you.

So we unscrewed the legs, poked the screws through a caardboard box and spray painted them black.

Putting it back together is always a lot of fun, as you get to see the finished product. I like how it turned out. Modern, yet very classic/romantic.

Now, if we can sell it...then we get to paint the bathroom for free!

Labor of Love (Part 1 of 3)

I love lace. I love the delicacy with which it presents itself to the world. That being said, I dont really use it very much. I do have some family doilies, and my wedding dress has some lace, but I dont go too crazy. I like to be able to clean things, and not have dust mites clinging to every available piece of cloth (they cling to everything else anyway.) So, I decided to try a painting technique. Why not paint the lace on the object? Easy to clean, lovely design, what could be better? We got this child's vanity in an old attic pick. Yes, we went into someone's hot and muggy attic for several hours. Yes, they let us jsut dig through things (can you believe it?!?!) unsupervised. Yes, we had to take our own flashlights. And yes, there was mouse droppings and dead birds up there. It was gross, but worth it. My boy LOVED it! American Pickers is his favorite tv show. So this school bus yellow vanity sat there looking at us. Begging for new life! I knew if we left ...

Blind Man Stood on the Road and he

First, I need to say that every time I think of this song, I think of one man: Don Strunk. He shaped my middle school years and beyond by singing this song....alot :-) On my way to work yesterday I passed by the subway stop. Usually there is a man with a mohawk at this corner passing out free newspapers. I realized as I was crossing the street that it was a different man (also signaling that it was a different free paper). I also noticed the man had a cane, a cane like blind people normally walk with. As I got onto the sidewalk I was going to continue down the avenue (as opposed to into the train like most people would be doing) and the man asked me if I'd like a newspaper. I was pretty amazed that he heard me walking by in tennis shoes while big trucks zoomed past us. I'm lucky if I can hear the conversation that's meant for me to hear it in these situations.

Me and my shadow!

Please feel free to listen (or watch!) this song while reading this post. :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyEf1Lp7Byk I have always thought silhouettes were such lovely and understated works of art. I would be fascinated by the people who did it at Disney World, Kings Island, or Central Park. They could cut your silhouette out in minutes! I decided I thought it would be fun art to hang in our humble bedroom. Our bedroom is a work in progress. These silhouettes are only the second thing I have hung on the wall, so I am taking my time with it. We did get around to painting in over the summer. It went from drab and boring, to vibrant and living. It was amazing to me how the paint actually made the room look much bigger! In a house cursed with small rooms, that is indeed a blessing. I started out with some frames and material. The frames were fine as they were, but several accent things in our bedroom are white, so I opted to paint them. The material...well, I want to use it behin...
